From flat and fast courses to terrain that’s downright mountainous, Arkansas has plenty of running events that will challenge anyone. Though you can find a race on just about any given weekend, some of them are classics. These venerable must-run events cover a lot of ground, including trail running and relay races. Hoof it for Heifer - This 20K trail run follows the Winthrop P. Rockefeller Boy Scout Trail in Petit Jean State Park, offering plenty of scenery and aid stations along the way. Entry fees benefit Heifer International.
Little Rock Marathon - Known for its scenic course and elaborate finisher’s medals, the Little Rock marathon is an Arkansas running staple. Run from downtown and pass through several Little Rock neighborhoods, with plenty of support and entertainment along the way.
Hogeye Marathon - This is one of the oldest marathons in Arkansas, now more than 40 years running. The course takes participants through many of the parks around Springdale and Fayetteville. The event also offers a half marathon, relay race and a 5K
Arkansas Traveller 100 - One of the oldest 100-mile races around, the Traveller is a true test of running ability. The challenging but beautiful course is a great introduction to ultra-running, but also attracts return runners every year.
Capital City Classic 10k - This flat and fast course in Little Rock is USATF-certified and is easily accessible. Test your mettle against some of the fastest runners in the state, or enjoy a more laid-back pace as you take in the sights and sounds of Two Rivers Park and the surrounding area.
Toad Suck Daze Run - This 5K & 10K run through Conway is a popular local event, complete with a wheelchair division of the 10K and a kids’ run.
RussVegas Half Marathon - This family-friendly event begins and ends in historic downtown Russellville and includes plenty of music, food and fun. It’s a fast course, too — perfect for a PR attempt.
Full mOOn 50k and 25k - This incredible run through the Ouachita Mountains takes place on unpaved roads at night. The course is marked with glow sticks and makes for a unique experience. See some of the wildest country in Arkansas on this challenging run.
Eureka Springs Multisport Festival - Take to the hills of the charming and scenic Northwest Arkansas town of Eureka Springs with a 10K, 5K and one-mile fun run/walk.
Outback in the Ozarks - This 205-mile endurance relay pits teams of 8-12 runners against the breathtaking rolling terrain of the Ozark Mountains. It may sound daunting, but teaming up with friends and family for a challenge this big is always a good time.
Arkansas Marathon - Going nearly 50 years strong, the Arkansas Marathon in Booneville is a scenic run that passes near the Ouachita and Ozark National Forests, with plenty of hills along the way. This mostly rural route lets you avoid crowds and truly enjoy the zen of running.
3 Bridges Marathon - This unique race stays primarily on the Little Rock River Trail and crosses the Big Dam Bridge, Clinton Presidential Bridge and Two Rivers Bridge. The course is USATF certified and is also a Boston Marathon qualifier.
